James Fraser memorial stone in the Black Isle
The photograph was taken by the late Finlay MacRae who was a District Officer in the Forestry Commission based in Dingwall at the time. The images are courtesy of his daughter Donna.
The site looks very weed free and new as in 1967 but it may only been in place 6-8 years following James Fraser’s death in the late 50s. The plaque is shown in the PDF link below this text. They read ‘In tribute to James Fraser Conservator of Forests, Forestry Commission, who between the years of 1924 -1956 established many of the forests visible from this point and others far beyond.’
It is said that some disagreed with part of the wording believing that James Fraser perhaps personally managed only some of the forest establishment in his long career. He was however responsible for the direction and setting the criteria of conservancy programmes and policies of plantation establishment in his Conservator role.
