Slasher Magazine Summary: Publication No. 257 - August/September 1969
The digitisation of the Slasher was undertaken by, and images courtesy of, the Forest Research Knowledge and Information Management staff based at both the Northern Research Station in Roslin, Scotland and Alice Holt in Surrey, where the original copies are currently located.
The content summary below was very kindly compiled by Diane Birkett, Bedfordshire. See PDF attachment link below the text to view the full document. A total of over 400 issues were produced between 1948 and the final issue in 2010.
Margam Forest Jubilee Celebrations
Details are given of the South Wales Jubilee celebrations which were concentrated in Margam Forest near Port Talbot.
A tree planting ceremony was held at the Coed Morgannwg Stone in Margam Forest.
Cornwall District Jubilee Celebrations
Mr R.S. Whale, Head Forester, Bodmin Forest, reported on the Jubilee Celebrations in the Cornwall District. He recalled planting the first tree in Plym Forest 20 years previously for the Forestry Commission.
Attending or taking part in the proceedings from the Forestry Commission were Mr E.E. Dixon, Assistant Conservator SW (E); Mr R. Pritchard, Head Forester (retired) who was a Forester-in-Charge of Bodmin Forest from 1926-1949; Mr Leslie W. Jenkins, Chairman; Mr G.D. Rouse, Conservator, South West (England) Conservancy; and Mr M.G. Harker, District Officer.
The Mayor was presented with a birthday cake by the two daughters of Mr W. Jago, an employee from the Glynn Beat of Bodmin Forest.
Letters Received
A congratulatory letter from the Rev. A. Gordon McGillivray regarding the benefits the Forestry Commission is bringing to the Highland area. A reply from H.A. Maxwell is also published.
A response from Mr T. Cooban after letters were sent to the Director General of the Central Office of Information. Mr T. Cooban, Head of the Regional Unit, sent thanks for the help the Commission has received in publicising Jubilee events.
Royal Show
East England, who were responsible for the much praised Conservancy outdoor exhibit were awarded the Silver Gilt Medal - the top award of the Forestry Section.
The theme "50 years of Forestry" was demonstrated by a simulated Forest Walk through a maze made from conifer tops. There was a wide range of other exhibits.
Chairman, Mr Leslie Jenkins received a letter of appreciation from the Minister of Agriculture who attended the Show.
Royal Cornwall Show
In the Forestry Section at Wadebridge, many different Hardwood and Conifer species were planted, which will become a permanent site.
Exhibits included a Norwegian Loggers Hut designed by District Officer M.G. Harker and erected by Forestry Commission staff, a Marquee with Timber Growers' Organisation exhibits, photographs of young plantations entered in the competition for Cornwall's Best Private Woodland and six original oil paintings on loan from Wiggins Teape of wild woodland animals.
Jubilee Efforts
An example of the contribution of Forestry Commission staff is evident in the work of Mr C. Bodkin, the Engraver at Alice Holt Research Station. Since January he has provided over 2,000 engraved notices, most of which have been used to describe items exhibited in various locations.
Royal Welsh Show
The exhibits in the Forestry Section were well patronized by the public and the Prince of Wales showed great interest during his visit.
Forestry Commissioner E. Gwynfryn Davies was in attendance throughout the duration of the show.
Riding Club's Countryside Appreciation Awards Scheme
The British Horse Society is running an award scheme to add interest for riders who cover the same ground on their rides.

Excerpt from The Sunday Post
More than 10,000 Government officials can enter your home or your business at any time. This includes 2,280 Inland Revenue Valuation Officers and 750 tax collectors. 200 Customs men can walk into premises and also 1,425 men from the Ministry of Agriculture, 415 Factory Inspectors and 150 Forestry Commission Officers.
Pottery Publicity
An enterprising souvenir merchant in Dundee is selling a pot figure that gives unexpected publicity to the Commission.
He makes a set of characters called: The Men of Glaur (clay) which sell by the thousand to tourists. Each character has a name and description such as "MacSporran, Keeper of the King’s Bawbees".
Another tale concerns McAber (McArbor) and uprooted trees. He won an action for plagiarism against one Malcolm in respect of Birnam Wood and the Macbeth affair. For the estates gained he appointed Commissioners of Forestry who maintain supplies to this day. The tactical movement was concluded by tossing the trunk at the enemy, and the McAber toss - (Tossing the Caber) is now a familiar ritual.
Poets Corner - Lines to An Overworked "Painter" by R. J. J.
While younger men go shooting, ride or fish,
Disport with balls or some such active caper,
I relax in an armchair with a pen
Committing thoughts and memories to paper.
