Slasher Magazine Summary: Publication No. 254 - March 1969
The digitisation of the Slasher was undertaken by, and images courtesy of, the Forest Research Knowledge and Information Management staff based at both the Northern Research Station in Roslin, Scotland and Alice Holt in Surrey, where the original copies are currently located.

Jubilee Year
About 200 exhibitors are planning for the Forestry Commission's Jubilee Exhibition at Edinburgh.
Conservancy Exhibits
The E (S) Conservancy provided an exhibit at the Exhibition of Sources and Resources for Youth Leaders, held in Aberdeen on 22nd March 1969. The aim of the exhibition was to give youth leaders an opportunity to see the resources and services available.
Camping Testimonial
An article in The Camping Club of Great Britain and Ireland newsletter quotes Forestry Commission Chairman, Mr Leslie Jenkins, speaking at the Forest Verderer's Court at Lyndhurst, New Forest saying "We are very alive to the problems of public recreation and the need for proper camping sites and similar facilities". It is pointed out that camp sites must pay their way and the Forestry Commission is in fact, one of the best and most successful operators of camp sites in Britain.
Honour for Commission
Forestry Commission and County Alderman E. Gwyn Davies, J.P was installed as Chairman of Glamorgan County Council during a ceremony in County Hall, Cardiff. He performed his first official function by attending the opening of a new Magistrates Court in Port Talbot.
Agricultural Show Judges
The Forestry Judges at this year's Royal Welsh Show will be Mr H.J. Saunders of Shrewsbury and Mr A.A. Smith-Jones of the Economic Forestry Group Ltd from Plas, Machynlleth.
Visual Aids "Leaning By Discovery"
The film "Learning By Discovery", presented by the Central Electricity Generating Board to the Council for Environmental Education, shows local school children undertaking field studies in the grounds of Drakelow Power Station, near Burton on Trent.
Marketing
The total receipts for produce in E (E) Conservancy for December 1968 exceeded £100,000.
Extra "Mural" Activities
Mr Wynne Pritchard, Superintendent of Works, Lorne Engineering (S) has painted a mural of Ballachulish Ferry and Loch Leven in the recently opened Ferry Boat Bar in the Ballachulish Hotel in Oban.
Declaring the Ferry Boat Bar open, Mr E.G. Sheffield, head of the timber firm, Sheffield and Co. (Scotland) Ltd., which operates from four points in Argyll, said the mural and the name of the bar would perpetuate Ballachulish Ferry.
Letters From Australia
Mr W.F. Stoddart writing from his home in Australia, sends his regards and best wishes, especially to his former colleagues in the Education Branch. In his report of local areas and the National Park, he gives an account of finding a large cone underneath the overhanging branches of a large tree of the genus Araucaria. The cone, globular in shape, 9 inches high and 28 inches mid-circumference weighed 12 pounds. The Dallimore & Jackson's Handbook of Coniferae identified the cone as being from a Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii).
Bush Exhibition
The Education exhibit will include a section on the history of the Forester Training Schools.
Forester! Don’t Fence It In!
A forester/draghtsman reports on the work involved when a member of the Acquisitions and Disposal Division set out to legalise the placing of a forest fence.

Mr Michael Vincent Edward, O.B.E. died on 25th February 1969.
Mr R. MacDonald, D(F)O II, Faskally F.T.S. HQ (E & T) has died.
Emeritus Professor Henry Marshall Steven, formerly of the Commission and Chair of Forestry at Aberdeen University from 1938-1963, died on 15th February 1969.
Mr J.T.L. Fitzherbert (Fitz), former Assistant Conservator, H. & M. South Wales died after a sudden illness.
Mr L.S. Osmaston died on 29th March aged 98 years.
John Blane M.B.E., formerly Scottish Directorate Mechanical Engineer died on 12th March 1969.
Harry Butcher, Forester at Purbeck until his retirement in 1953, has died aged 74.
