"Do-It-Yourself" Forest Family
Mrs H. Nurse of N.E. England Conservancy tells the story of a forest family in Wark.
In the early days of Wark Forest, the vacant farmhouse of Pundershaw and the surrounding fields were made into a holding. The original planner and pioneer planter was Mr A.D. Hopkinson.
The holding was occupied and worked by Mr Joe Potts, his wife and four sons, Tommy, Barty, Young Joe and Jimmy.
Joe Potts has recently retired after thirty years' service with the Commission. His sons are now key men in the forest staff. Tommy and young Joe recently completed the building of houses adjacent to the village of Wark. Tommy is a skilled plant operator, young Joe and Barty are skilled production workers and Jimmy is a skilled management worker.
