Slasher Magazine Summary: Publication No. 212 - August 1965
The digitisation of the Slasher was undertaken by, and images courtesy of, the Forest Research Knowledge and Information Management staff based at both the Northern Research Station in Roslin, Scotland and Alice Holt in Surrey, where the original copies are currently located.

Staff Changes
Mr T.H. McGeorge, Chief Clerk, Edinburgh is to be Deputy Establishment Officer at HQ. London.
Mr George Taylor, Chief Clerk, Aberystwyth is to be Head of Industrial Establishments Section, London.
Mr E.H. Bradford, Management Research is to take charge of Budgetary Control, Finance Branch.
Mr M. Nicolson is to be Assistant Senior Officer for Scotland, Edinburgh.
Mr R. Coote will head the new O & M Branch at HQ.
Mr E.E. Dixon transferred from S.E. England to be Assistant Conservator in S.W. England.
Mr G.F. Ballance transferred from E. England to be Assistant Conservator in S.E. England.
Mr D.A. Mithen goes on promotion to E. England as Assistant Conservator.
Mr J. R. Hampson leaves N. Wales on promotion to Assistant Conservator S.W. England.
Mr R.O. Drummond is to be Assistant Conservator N. Wales.
Mr J.N. Kennedy is to be promoted to Assistant Conservator in Forest Management Division, HQ.
Mr D. Graham-Campbell is to be promoted to Assistant Conservator in Forest Management Division, HQ.
Mr C.D. Begley leaves S.E. England to be Chief Education and Training Officer at HQ.
Mr J.H. James is to become Conservator N. Wales.
Mr A.B. Westcott, formerly in the Office of Director, England, leaves the Commission to become Chief Executive Officer at the Ministry of Housing and Local Government.
Members wanted for Commonwealth Forestry Association
Sir Arthur Gosling, former Director General of the Commission and current Chairman of the Commonwealth Forestry Association appealed for an increased membership of the Association.
The role of the Association is to promote forestry throughout the Commonwealth.
Santon Downham's Big Week
Santon Downham, the forest village at Thetford, East England Conservancy has had its Big Week. It commenced with the fourth Woodchoppers Gala opened by Mr Richard Chard, the senior Forest Officer.
Activities included a logging display and Mr Rex Whitta, Deer warden, contributed an excellent wildlife exhibition, with the emphasis on deer control and supported by the reproduction of the sounds and calls of a number of different species.
There were police dog and gymnastic displays, and train rides by courtesy of American Air Force friends from the nearby Lakenheath base. Mr. A. McQuarrie, Ganger, operated the popular "flying cherub skyline".
On Sunday, the following day, the churchyard extension was consecrated by the Lord Bishop of Dunwich.
On the following Friday, Sir Hugh Carleton Greene, Director General of the B.B.C., accompanied by the County Planning Officers of East and West Suffolk, arrived at Santon Downham in the course of judging to find Suffolk's Best Kept Village. The church and churchyard gained top marks for immaculate appearance, but the village was beaten into second place by one mark by Tostock, with a score of 99. But Santon Downham is in the lead "tourist wise" if the church visitors' book is anything to go by. The popularity score at a recent date was Santon Downham 643, Easten 246, Tostock 26 and Horham 16.
The Big Week ended on the Saturday with the wedding of Miss Anita Catton, Forest Clerk on the Santon Beat of Thetford to Mr. Peter Martin of Hockwold.
Esgairgeiliog Crown Forest Queen
In the forest village at Dovey Corris, North Wales, the forest community crowned their Forest Queen, Miss Iseabail Tear, daughter of Forester D. Tear. The crowning ceremony was performed by Miss Irene Williams of Plas Rhiwgwreiddyn, Ceinws.
The forest queen and her retinue, which included children of forest workers, boarded a beautifully decorated lorry and led by the Corris and District Band, toured the district, taking in the villages of Corris and Aberllefenni.
The fancy dress competitions at Esgairgeiliog were judged by Mrs Fred Evans of Llanwrin and Miss Irene Williams. Sports events has considerable support. Thanks were due to the Master of Ceremonies, Forester J. Read for the able way he conducted all of the events. All proceeds went to the Village Hall fund.
Retirement
Mr A.C. Pywell, Forester, Willingham Forest, East England Conservancy has retired after nearly 38 years with the Commission.

Cricket in The North East
A report of the 13th annual cricket match which took place between the North Eastern Timber Merchants Association and staff of the North East England Conservancy for the Tom Place Cup.
Mr A. Rix, District Officer, Mr B. Stockdale, Assistant Forester and Mr Geoff Chambers, Clerical Officer were all in great form but the opposing captain played a fine innings to win the game.
Later, at a ceremony, Mr Rix presented a replica of the Tom Place Cup to Mr Jack Maund, Conservancy Utilisation Officer, who regularly organised the annual competition, as a sign of appreciation before his retirement.
Grizedale Open Day
The first Open Day at Grizedale took place last month. There were visits to the Deer Museum and Genetics Nursery in addition to a tour of the forest.
There are now 45 members of the Grizedale Angling Club. Mr Martin Orrom, District Officer, is the President. Riparian owners, other than the Commission, let the Club use their waters. In all, the Club controls, with reservations, four and a half miles of water.
Details are given of the local deerskin industry, believed to be operated by ladies of the local forest community. Some of the products, were on display and for sale at the Game Fair and the Royal Lancashire Show and many have been sold in different countries, including Australia, America and Germany.
Northerwood House Social Club Committee Elections
The two retiring Committee members are Mr W.A. Cormack, Controller of Finance and Mr W.A. Cadman, Deputy Surveyor, New Forest are willing to serve for a further term, if re-elected.
The serving members are Mr E.H. Bradford and Mr D.A. Mithen. Mr J.H. James, Chief Education Officer and Mr W.H. Middleton, Secretary-Treasurer are ex-officio members.

Seed Collection by Ski
Mr H.J. Hooper's article in June Slasher about an unusual method of carrying out a valuation from Sutton Bank by air, reminded Mr Peter McIntyre of when he collected seed from the European larch at Bachnagairn, by skiing to the area, which is nearly two thousand feet up at the back of Glen Doll.
The Epitaph
The tale of the stone in Shropshire in the July issue reminded Mr T.S. Thompson, District Officer for North Cardiganshire of a gravestone in one of the dales of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The story goes that on a winter's morning after a bitterly cold night, the body of an old man was found on the moors. No one knew who he was or whence he had come, and the kindly vicar therefore composed the following epitaph on the simple stone erected above the grave: -
Italy and Spain, Germany and France,
Have been through life, my weary dance.
So now I claim, the grave my dearest friend,
That to my journeys all, Hath put an end.
