Slasher Magazine Summary: Publication No. 186 - June 1963
The digitisation of the Slasher was undertaken by, and images courtesy of, the Forest Research Knowledge and Information Management staff based at both the Northern Research Station in Roslin, Scotland and Alice Holt in Surrey, where the original copies are currently located.

Birthday Honours
Mr J.A.B. McDonald, Conservator, South Scotland, has been awarded an O.B.E.
Mr Eric Lewis (was Chief Executive Officer and Purchasing Officer at HQ), has been awarded an O.B.E.
Similar awards were made to Mr John McEwen and Mr H.L. Wright who have furthered the cause of private forestry.
F.A.O Study Tour
A full report is given of the fifth F.A.O. Silvicultural study tour which had the theme "Selection of species for forests in their productive role as a source of raw material for industry" and took place covering old woodlands in the Forest of Dean and Tintern, hill afforestation in the Black Mountains of Wales and the pine forests of Thetford.
After the official tour, there were excursions to the research station at Alice Holt and the National Pinetum at Bedgebury. Also a visit to the Commonwealth Forestry Institute at Oxford.
Muntjacs
A report on the high mortality rate of Muntjac deer through various causes.
The New Forest
A debate considering if the New Forest is a Royal Forest.
Round and About
1,500 gallons of creosote were lost when fire destroyed a shed at the sawmill at Culloden.
A tenant in Yorkshire has written to the Conservator, N.E. England asking permission to alter his sitting room fireplace from an old turf hearth to one which will burn coal.
A North Scotland fire report refers to a neighbour who set fire to a broom brush to test if conditions were suitable for muir burning. He discovered they were when 250 acres of unplanted land was burnt costing the Commission around £100 to extinguish.
The S.W. England Conservancy Office staff educational outing to Exeter Forest included a visit to Haldon Depot and a demonstration of the manufacture of planting tubes for Pinus radiata. They also saw trees "in check" which had put on considerable less quarter girth than some members of the party of the same mature age.
It was reported in a local newspaper that a Commission worker at Thetford found a dandelion plant 18 inches high on which there were 106 blooms.

Retirement
Mr M.E.W. Mackenzie MBE, Senior Executive Officer in the Office of Director, Scotland has retired after 43 years with the Commission.
