Glenrigh Forest – Lochaber - Forest map circa 1985
The map was recovered from shed at Newton Nursery which acted as a storage area for Forest Research who used the maps to locate forest and tree experiments in the field.
This forest area was one of the very early acquisitions by the Forestry Commission with over 2000ha of land acquired from Locheil Estate in 1921. James Rutherford was the first forester in charge followed by John Kennedy in 1928. By the date of this map much of the early planted areas had been or was in the process of being clearfelled. However on the upper margins of the forest and slower growing areas planted in 1923 to 1927 are still present as are some areas from the early 1930s. In the 1960s and 1970s it appears that some ‘up the hill’ new planting was carried out using Sitka spruce and Lodgepole pine.
The area known as Callart above the narrows of Loch Leven was acquired from Lucy family estate in 1938 (288ha) and planted up from 1940-1949.
The head forester in 1970s was Jim Hislop assisted by John Boustead. Neil Maclean was a Keeper or wild life ranger at this time and two forest workers names are partially recalled Jack Critch (Newfoundlander) who was felling at that time with a very tall man first name may have been Lachie?. Neil Mackinnon a forestry lorry driver lived on one of the crofts above Corran Ferry and originated from St Kilda.
