Forestry Commission staff working as volunteers in Glenelg Mountain Rescue Team
The image was brought to the attention of Forestry Memories by Tom McLellan, Taynuilt. Glenelg Mountain Rescue Team have kindly given permission to use the image which features one of the first rescues by the team seen here using a MacInnes MK2 stretcher with wheel.
The names and occupations of the Glenelg MRT members were initially provided by Johnny and Margaret Cameron, Glenelg.
Tom McLellan says 'The photograph is probably unique in terms of giving the names and occupations of the MRT members at that time - many of whom were foresters, farmers, crofters, stalkers and other local people with a natural affinity for 'the hill'. It also shows that MRT members in those days were using their own work clothing for the hill rather than the specialist mountain clothing that rescue team members use today.
Last year Glenelg MRT celebrated their 50th Anniversary of being established to help save life in the hills, as described in the attached article in the West Highland Free Press.' (See PDF link Below)
