Two historic Begg Ploughs in their splendid new coats and colours
The image is courtesy of Douglas Clark of Parkgate and shows his company’s skill in the restoration of these two Begg ploughs (possibly model No 3). The beautifully presented machines have been totally shot blasted and had a baked two part paint coat applied to preserve what was a very badly rusted metal structure. This is the first two of a planned long term programme by Douglas to present a fully restored 30 item plough and Clark of Parkgate historic machine display at his Duncow Estate on the Blairhall Road near the Windmill Stump. Public access is available through a kissing gate which leads presently into a grassy field. In future this access will be improved and made more easily accessible.
These ploughs probably last turned a furrow circa the mid 1950s and were manufactured in the 1940s. The Begg family (John or James Begg and Robert Begg) had a workshop at Tarbolton and were one of the early pioneers in forestry plough manufacture. Very little is recorded about this pioneering plough manufacturing family but there is a brief mention of them being involved in producing a plough and frame structure that mounted the plough directly onto the rear of a tracked tractor – first mounted plough.
