Historic forestry ploughs in new location at Duncow Estate, Dumfries
The image is courtesy of Douglas Clark of Parkgate and in this case shows the historic forestry ploughs on their temporary site at Duncow Estate, Dumfries, awaiting restoration. Douglas had removed the neglected machines from the Forest of Ae location where they had been located for almost 50 years. He has begun a long term programme of restoration and so far completed the restoration and painting of two ploughs. They will eventually form a display at his Duncow Estate complete with information panels and historical details. Access paths and routes have been laid out for the visiting public but more work on these also in the future.
The ploughs featured here from the left are: an early winch rope operated lifting Parkgate trail plough frame with Parkgate tine head and sock; later modified trail plough with carriage frame reversed on the beam and now fitted for addition of a hydraulic ram (missing) and disposing of the winch ropes. Mounted on the beam is a single furrow Parkgate tine head with an outrigger tine only on the opposite side. Next is a much modified heavy plough beam on a widened Parkgate carriage fitted at the rear with two tines followed by self propelled angled scarifier toothed discs.
The PDF link below has a closer image of the first two ploughs and the next follow on photograph shows a collection of double furrow plough heads and ploughs, the nearest a very deep D90 peat head, next to the right is a RLR (Roy Lister Robinson) trail plough, next may be a D60 double furrow ploughing head for moderately soft ground, thereafter may be a Begg plough and lastly in yellow not identified. The final image on the PDF is of the Lokomo plough in its new temporary location awaiting its turn for restoration. On the far side hidden from view looks to be the Cuthbertson draining plough as its tall pole is just visible.
