Forestry Houses Strathyre Forest 1957

Date Added: 03 November 2023 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1957 Picture No: 5731

Photograph is courtesy of William Fleming, Polmont, who worked in Strathyre Forest as an apprentice Forest Craftsman and stayed in the hostel there for a time around 1957.

These Swedish, Finnish and other style timber houses were built in many forests throughout Scotland in the early 1950s possibly even as early as late 1948/9 by the Forestry Commission for forest workers and their families. They were generally well liked and considered warm houses in their day. It looks as though there may have been four buildings each with two semi detached houses built at Strathyre Forest around 1950.

Confirmation of the number and year of build would be welcome. Any comments from people who lived in these types of forestry houses also welcome.
