South Laggan Forest restocking and over view of Forest Worker holdings at Laggan
The image was provided by Alan Stevenson and formed part of a paper written by Alan Stevenson and Alan Mackay in 1991 titled Forestry in the Highland Region. The paper is available on Forestry Memories Picture No 5720
The forest was first planted in the very early 1920s by the relatively newly formed Forestry Commission. At the time of this photograph was taken that tree crop had largely been felled and replanted as shown. The PDF link below shows another view slightly further south wards.
This very steep face was quite unstable and in heavy rains the fast running burns brought down gravel covering what used to be the Fort William and Fort Augustus railway line and the main A82 road below it. The former Laggan Forest nursery was in one of the fields close to the bottom of the slope.
