Alex Grossert at Dean Forester Training School for three months – Brief notes

The very small Shooter’s Year Book (6 x 10cm) 1950 was used by Alex Grossert to record his three month stay at Forest of Dean Forester Training School as part of his two year training course at Glentress Forester Training School. This exchange was a training strategy that was devised to give students an experience of forestry in different parts of the country with different soils, ecology and traditions.
Note that Alex travelled by train from Peebles on a Thursday (5th January) and on Friday morning was out in the forest draining on wet clay! He records his days at lectures on various subjects as well as days out working in the forest felling oaks, marking trees for thinning, felling and thinning conifers and on some tours to other forest areas and estates. He notes some flower, bird and tree species seen.
On his return to Peebles he is back into routine of lectures and work days some of which are at a sawmill, draining, chute extraction of logs and nursery work. Again he notes the flowering times of certain vegetation and tree species. The diary entries end on Sat 20th May 1950.
