Forestry Commission PS 16 – Demand Note for Plants (from nurseries)
This PS 16 pad was part of a collection passed to Forestry Memories from a storage shed in Newton Nursery used by Forest Research.
Another document that endured for many decades in the Forestry Commission. There was a suit of ‘Nursery’ documents (titled PS or Plant Supply) that helped regulate the planning of seed sowing , lining out and eventual dispatch.
The four year lead in time on estimating quantities of which tree species to plant in forests, the vagaries of weather, damaging pests, frosts or mistakes in nursery treatments, changes to totally different planting locations at forests plus the sudden changes in ‘species fashion’ for certain site types all conspired to render this exercise a logistical juggling act.
The PS 16 was used by the planting forester to request a consignment of plants but only once they had received the actual plant allocations for the forest for that season from the Conservancy Office. On occasions the actual allocations were quite different from what was expected!
