Morinsh Forest part of GlenlIvet Forest (Formerly Scootmore)
This map image was part of a collection passed to Forestry Memories from a storage shed in Newton Nursery used by Forest Research.
This early hand drawn map has been initially like many others with what appears to be a combination of the letters RB but hard to define. It is likely that these maps would have been all hand drawn in the cartographic section at head office in Edinburgh.
The forest area has been compartmented with the numbers running in sequence from 38 to 86. There are three Forest Research experimental areas noted in black of which two are labelled as 1935 NS (Norway spruce) spacing trials (one may be 1936?) and a third area as a draining experiment 1935.
There are several hand written notes in pencil one of which reads ‘PC seed stand (Prince George)’ indicating that the quality of the trees in this stand must have been high and worthy of their tree seed being used for sowing in forest nurseries.
Another note reads ‘SS 1710-1716’ and points to a shaded locality in Compartment No 40?
On the bottom right hand corner is a much later note possibly written in 1966 noting that the ‘Experiments on Conservancy Maps Checked’. The research foresters were crosschecking that the local foresters had forest maps on which the experiment areas were noted and thus help prevent any unwanted work activities and actions by local foresters that would compromise the experimental trials. The mistaken actions did occur from time to time!
