This map image was part of a collection passed to Forestry Memories from a storage shed in Newton Nursery used by Forest Research.

The earliest experimental plots appear to be 1926 and 1927 with additions in various years up until 1938. Only some plots have labelled tree species and those are in various single or mixture configurations. The species include Thuya, Tsuga, Norway spruce, Mountain pine, Lodgepole pine (PC), Sitka spruce and Scots pine. Note the location of a soil pit and a hut at the bottom of the map.

The red line delineates the extent of a forest fire in 1942 which reached the Research Plots and destroyed areas to ‘the west of the red line’. This is taken to be the right hand side of the map.

The PDF contains an additional Forest Research area next to the above planted in 1948 and unusually some 12 or 13 plough furrows planted up in single species lines as follows: 3 rows of Hybrid larch, 1 row of Lodgepole pine (PC), 1 row of Sitka spruce, 1 row of Scots pine, 1 row of Douglas fir, 1 row of Scots pine, 1 row of Lodgepole pine, 3 rows of Hybrid Larch and possible 1 row of Scots pine.
