Culbin Forest circa 1930 - Probably
Untitled photograph mounted informally on the inside wall of a management shed in Newton Nursery. This may be the west end or Low Wood side of Culbin Forest around 1930.
How the photograph was taken is also a mystery as helicopters would not have been that common.
This area of Culbin was planted in the mid 1800 period up until 1880s and felled in the First World War. The Forestry Commission acquired the area about 1921 and began replanting the felled sites. Note some larger trees scattered about in the distance. These could be remnants of the first crop not worth felling at the time.
The people are well dressed and appear to be going for a ‘Sunday Walk’ towards the beach. One man however is working on the side of the road and has a bucket container of some sort.
Many question but any suggestions or answers would be very welcome. Note the second image in the attached PDF below which shows the foreground of the same view and is perhaps from a much larger original image. Again people are well dressed and heading out for a walk.
