This is the front page of the Revised November 1983, North Scotland Conservancy Instruction No.13, Choice of Species for Planting.
These instructions were revised and copied to all staff as Conservancy policy was changed, due to either, political, commercial or Forest Research advice dictated. Whether this was always followed, or followed good silvicultural practise could be debated until the cows came home, as we often did at the time in the Torrachilty Forest Office; Tim Taylor, Jim Colling, Frank Thom and myself.
I have scanned the whole instruction document and attach an OCR pdf copy that is searchable for those who may be interested.
Some of the advise would be very questionable these days (2020's), now that Ecological Site Classification (ESC) and better climatic probability model data is available on which to make silvicultural planting decisions.
Now that the plantings from this era are coming up felling the question arises. Was the timber quality of the species we planted, as instructed, up to scratch?
