Forestry Commission planning map for Port Clair Forest
One of a series of maps and drawings found in old ex military map cases stored in the loft of the Fort August Forest office and recovered by Grant Macintosh.
This map appears to have been hand drawn prior to and initialled in 1924 by FS. This could well be F (Frank?) Scott who was the Divisional Officer for the Forestry Commission in North Scotland at the time. Total area of the acquired estate is 5512 acres but only 2610 acres are deemed to be plantable as a productive forest.
Port Clair Forest was one of the first forest areas worked by the Forestry Commission following its inception in November 1919. The planted areas labelled as P20 (probably January to May 2020) are shown in compartment numbers 1- 8. The planting years up to 1932 are also shown (P32). The forest was initially under the supervision of John Cameron Head Forester based at Fort Augustus and forester James McEwan based at Port Clair.
Note the Forest Worker Holding No 3 on the extreme left – where are Nos 1 and 2?
There are some later pencilled in notes with reference to ‘Provisional planting limits’ and new tree planting areas in 1950 and 1951.
