Forest Office Ballachulish circa 2000

The forest office is the old Polloch office not Ballachulish office.

Hmmmm. I recall visiting Polloch (Glenhurich Forest) circa 1970 when Bob Howard was the forester in charge with Henry Bowers as his assistant forester. Phamie MacKinnon was the clerk and travelled daily over the hill from Strontian. The small office, perhaps two rooms, was located on a small hill above the former School (at that time a bothy for the visiting road squad) but below the wooden Swedish style workers houses. It looked quite different to the building and location pictured above.

The picture is of the Polloch store. The office is just out of sight behind the store on the right. The old Croft house is on the hill above. That was a forestry house until it was sold about 10 years ago.The swedish house's are behind the trees on the left of the picture.

Thanks John for all the details. There are so many trees growing along the roadsides now when it used to be so open.
When working on the Achanellan forest area below Ben Resipol we used to moor the motor launch a little further towards Loch Shiel where a bend in the river Doilet came close to the forest road.
I was trying to recall the name of a small older gentleman who worked there as a sort of handyman, looked after the tool shed, the old School bothy, did the met readings and checked the water supplies circa 1972. The boat mooring is still there. We still use the boat to get in and out of Achanellan. No one can remember old Johns surname but might find out sometime.

Good to hear some old systems remain in place! I checked with my forestry colleague Frank Thom and he recalls the name as John Dunnet. He thinks that John came from another forestry bothy somewhere else in the country.
