Sandy Rose at the Forestry Houses at Newton Nursery near Elgin

Michael says - ‘The picture of my grandfather reading a paper is taken at the rear of his Forestry Commission house in Newton, Morayshire, adjacent to the nursery. His daughter Doreen, my Mum’s sister and my aunt, is peeping round the corner. Doreen’s age and the colour of my Grandad’s hair suggests the photograph was taken around 1939, just before he goes off to war as a Sergeant Major in the Seaforth Highlanders. He was in the Territorial Army at the outbreak of the war and was called up immediately.’
