Weeding bracken in Strathord Forest
The images are courtesy of Michael Lawrence of Bankfoot whose grandfather, Sandy Rose, was Forester and Head Forester at Ledmore Forest Nursery from Nov 1949 (when land was acquired) until his retirement in 1969. In 1966 the nearby Strathord Forest was brought under his charge.
The forest team are working their way through an area of light bracken before it reaches full grown height. It is assumed most of them are using hooks (sickles) which do not show up against the dark clothing. The man second from right may be using a long handled hook or slasher.
Any other thoughts?
Mike says 'Tam Cowan is the man third from the right. He worked for the Strangs at Moneydie Farm for over 30 years. I reckon the photograph was taken on the banks of the Shochie burn, south of Ledmore'.
