Weeding willow herb in Strathord Forest
The images are courtesy of Michael Lawrence of Bankfoot whose grandfather, Sandy Rose, was Forester and Head Forester at Ledmore Forest Nursery from Nov 1949 (when land was acquired) until his retirement in 1969. In 1966 the nearby Strathord Forest was brought under his charge.
Two of the Strathord Forest or Ledmore Nursery team in the midst of head high willow herb during the height of summer. The two are working with weeding hooks or sickles (heucks) as shown in the PDF link below. The man on the right in classic position holding the top of the Sitka spruce in his left hand well clear of the hook as he sweeps the blades through the closely surrounding herb. Note the tall ‘coles’ of drying hay in the field adjacent.
