Preparing to lay a culvert pipe in a burn crossing
The images are courtesy of Michael Lawrence of Bankfoot whose grandfather, Sandy Rose, was Forester and Head Forester at Ledmore Forest Nursery from Nov 1949 (when land was acquired) until his retirement in 1969. In 1966 the nearby Strathord Forest was brought under his charge.
Before hydraulic back actors and excavators were everyday items for this type of work much was done by men with shovel and spade as seen here. The viewer can see the volume shovelled up onto the bank of the burn as the team work to get a long smooth level bed for the assembled metal corrugated culvert pipe. The size of the stone being moved also gives some idea of the labour involved in such projects.
