Small scale acquisition map of Corrour Forest

Date Added: 11 October 2022 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1969 Picture No: 5463

The image is courtesy of Stephen Newsom, Aberdour, who has scanned this old map used his father Geoff Newsom while Head Forester at Corrour Forest in 1968-1971.

The map outlines the plans and planting ambitions as at 1969 and shows the fences (deer) then in position as well as proposed fences near Fersit plus, more interestingly , an area above Strathossian Lodge, an area on the north western edge of Loch Ossian and another area north of Lubnaclach.

The hatched area and the blank fenced area is hand annotated as planted 1967 to spring 1971 by Geoff. A hand written note also indicates that ploughing was taking place in the proposed enclosure next to Fersit when Geoff left the area (1972).

The map also shows the route of the newly constructed forestry road from Torgulbin to Loch Ossian and also the spur heading west into the older plantations at Laggan Dam and Fersit. This would allow thinning and harvesting operations to be planned. The formerly well used track from Fersit to Corrour Lodge is also indicated as are the areas excluded from the purchase at the head of Loch Ossian. The area at Lubnaclach appears to have been sold by the Forestry Commission in 1969/1970.
