Geoff Newsom and Family at No 10 Forestry Houses, Torlundy (Leanachan Forest)
The photograph courtesy of Stephen Newsom, Aberdour, and was taken by a family friend Sven Redin, (who came to visit as a teenager from his home in Sweden in 1968).
This lovely informal family portrait by Sven shows the Newsom family outside their Forestry House home. The people from the left are Geoff Newsom (Head Forester Corrour Forest) and children Anthony, Stephen, Rachel, Deborah, and wife Jill. Honey the dog completes the line up.
Geoff was transferred from Gisburn Forest NW (E) to Leanachan Forest, Fort William, in August 1966 and was responsible for the new planting operations then taking place largely around Loch Eilt and Callop next to Loch Shiel. Following the purchase of Corrour Estate by the Forestry Commission, Geoff took charge from January 1968 until December 1971, while still based at Torlundy, primarily organising and managing all the new planting operations as well those staff who had transferred from the Estate. In March 1972 Corrour was amalgamated with Strathmashie Forest. Geoff was then relocated to Wark Forest, and again to Jervaulx Forest (both NE England), and ended his forestry career in November 1983.
The image in the PDF is of Geoff well into retirement on a visit in 2005 when he met the forester Dennis Moir at Snailbeach in the Welsh Marches, Geoff’s first forest posting and his first establishment experience.
