Wood yard and timber business W & A Davie possibly in Fife
The photograph is courtesy of Peter Easson, Kirkcaldy, who is related on his maternal grandmother’s side to the Davie family. He has come across this photograph and believes the men on either side of the older gentleman could be Willie and Alexander Davie. In the 1911 census Alexander Davie, age 18, was recorded as an apprentice sawyer living with his parents near Falkland, Fife.
This photograph may have been taken about 1930 or later as the presence of bib and brace overalls did not generally appear until after this time. The startling number of young boys could indicate close proximity to a town possibly in school holiday time. The trees behind are very small and some pine can be identified which could be undergoing their first thinning and being cut down and sned with the saws and heavy axes shown. The presence of so many peeling spades points to a role for the boys who may also be employed pulling out the felled small trees to the processing site. Peeled pit props or other fencing material may have been the end products.
