Norman Shand’s timber lorry loading up – circa 1981
The image is courtesy of Tam Anderson, Perth, who worked in forestry for many years. While as forester on Stobhall Estate he recalls the lorries coming in to remove some first thinnings from the forests. The registration number of the nearest lorry, a Volvo F73, is possibly ATS 266V (1979/80). According to the details on the lorry door Norman Shand’s haulage company was based in Burrelton with a Kinrossie telephone number.
Tam indicates that the driver loading is Jim MacGowan and the man walking is Norman Shand’s brother, his first name not recalled.
Any details and information Norman Shand’s timber haulage business would be very welcome.

Could the man walking away from the timber lorry be the same person driving the Fordson major with half tracks on Lour Estate picture number 2922 under Leslie Phillip, if I remember correct his last name was Shand. I think it looks like the same lorries that hauled timber from Lour.

Leslie Phillip, you didn’t work on Dunecht Estate back in the seventies? ???? I found out the lad walking name it’s Andy Shand

No sorry Tam I worked on Lour Estate in the 1960's and then on Panmure Estate from the 1970's onwards. I take that Andy Shand is the man driving the Fordson major with half tracks in my picture number 2922.?

Hi Leslie, I’ve had a look at your picture can’t give you an answer if that’s Andy Shand or not? Most of the Shands lived in and around Balbeggie think there was four brothers I knew three of them Norman, Andy and Gordon who did work as a contractor mostly first thinning. Dupplin estate had one of these half tracks when I worked there. Gordon and Andy are still living Norman passed away some years ago.
