Machine lifting a bed of lined out spruce trees

Date Added: 24 June 2022 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1960 Picture No: 5401

The images are courtesy of Michael Lawrence of Bankfoot whose grandfather, Sandy Rose, was Forester and Head Forester at Ledmore Forest Nursery from 1950 (when land was acquired) until his retirement in 1969.

It was initially assumed that this is an undercutting operation during the height of the growing season judging by the new shoot growth. There is quite a bit of soil disturbance. However the note on the back of the photograph describes this as a plant lifter with two depth control side wheels. The additional photograph shown in the PDF below highlights the ‘half moon’ additions added to the ‘Gun Plant Lifter’ blade to untangle and separate the side roots between the rows. This out of season operation must there for be a photo demo. Note that the follow on two images are of ‘undercutters’.
