Britain’s Forests - Drumtochty Forest – Short Forest History Publication
Some documents were passed on from the family of Tom A Robbie who was the Forestry Training School principal at Glentress 1947-1953 and also at Faskally 1953-1955 and thereafter in Conservancy Office appointments in Scotland. The items were brought to the attention of Forestry Memories by Mairi McGeachy, Business Support Manager, Aberfoyle Office.
This little booklet would have been published and made available shortly before Tom Robbie was transferred as a District Officer to the Brechin District from Faskally Forester Training School circa 1955. The leaflet has high quality images and presents historical facts and progress of the forest formation in a very readable style. It does bring to the fore some technical terms and details of tree species but there is a strong emphasis on the historical past, the countryside views and activities that would appeal to the general reader.
It is evident from the list on the back page of the booklet that several of these ‘Forest Histories’ were produced for sale to the public. In all a total of eleven forest names are listed covering locations in England, Scotland and Wales, five of which are located in Scotland. In addition to Drumtochty Forest these are:
Forest of Ae
Culbin Forest
Loch Ard Forest
Strathyre Forest
These publications are no longer generally available and their addition to the Forestry Memories archive would be very welcome.
