The formal opening proceedings within the David Marshall Lodge

Guests are looking onto to what appears to be the handing over of a silver key by architect James Shearer (back to camera) to David Marshall in recognition of his early conception of such a visitor venue and his persuasive arguments to convince the Carnegie UK Trust committee of the value of such an amenity for families visiting the hills and national parks.
David apparently championed the provision of buildings that would harmonise with the locality and provide a viewing facility and rest place for those less able to tackle the strenuous climbs and walks to distant points. He also promoted the provision of information and guidance to enable visitors to understand their privilege and responsibilities to enable the community as a whole to enjoy the natural beauty of the parks and scenic locations. This went hand in hand with promoting a sense of protecting and conserving the features that were special in these spectacular localities.
A more detailed story of David Marshall Lodge is told in the little booklet ‘The David Marshall Lodge – 50 years of excellence’ by David Wilkie first published in August 2010. There does not appear to be any publisher quoted or ISBN book number but may have initially been sold at the Lodge Forest Visitor Centre. There is however a label on the rear cover ‘Back to Back Design Tel. 01877386222’
