WW1 Hand flexible Chain saw

This tool is owned by Brian Fletcher of Conon Bridge who worked with Wm. Ogilvie haulage company for a time.

This saw was issued to troops in WW1 and the fitted leather belt pouch may have contained in addition to the saw and saw set with handle - two saw handles and perhaps a file with handle.
The name of the maker, Francis Wood and Son, Sheffield 1915 is stamped onto the handle rings along with services broad arrow - detail is shown in the attached PDF.

Does anyone own or once owned a complete set? Are there any museums with forestry tool exhibits in Scotland?

This saw has fearsome looking teeth I wonder how easy or how hard it was to get it started to cut. I remember the head forester on Lour Estate back in the sixties singing the praises of this type of saw for removing the large branches from beech trees. I've one of these saw chains and, in fact, just used it today to remove a 2" dia. branch of a dead elm I intend dropping, attaching a rope to the ends to allow me to pull it to & fro. Comment left on 01 February 2023 at 20:34 by Bob Spowart
