Weeding in Ledmore Forest Nursery
The images are courtesy of Michael Lawrence of Bankfoot whose grandfather, Sandy Rose, was Forester and Head Forester at Ledmore Forest Nursery from 1950 (when land was acquired) until his retirement in 1969. In 1966 the nearby Strathord Forest was brought under his charge. The year of the photograph is estimated to be around 1957.
This is an unusual bed of trees that the team are working in. The trees may be Sitka spruce but are very widely spaced out for normal forest planting trees. By the end of the growing season the trees will also be very large and difficult to plant in the forest. It is possible that these could be Forest Research trees grown from special seed or for a particular experiment. Any suggestions welcome?
The men are using Dutch hoes to loosen the soil and expose the roots of the weeds to the drying sun. Some of the workers have been named by Mike, his brother Sandy with some help from some residents of Bankfoot. The nursery workers from the left are:
