Team filling the lining out boards at Ledmore Nursery
The images are courtesy of Michael Lawrence of Bankfoot whose grandfather, Sandy Rose, was Forester and Head Forester at Ledmore Forest Nursery from 1950 (when land was acquired) until his retirement in 1969. In 1966 the nearby Strathord Forest was brought under his charge. The year of the photograph is estimated to be around 1957.
A lovely clear image of the board filling team at work – this time with a three person team. The image shows clearly the open lining out board with its bottom edge hard against the slotted guide board. The team are placing the young seedling with their root collars just at the very bottom edge of the lining out board but with roots inserted into the slots of guide board which provides the required spacing. Once the board is filled its other half is swung over on its irons and the soft rubber strip presses down on the seedlings holding them in place especially when the rings are slipped and pushed hard down on the irons. The roots hang down below soil level when the lining out board is placed on the ploughed line.
Mike has named the ladies as Kate Fenwick on the left and Annie Henderson on the right. Can anyone name the young man? Any comments and further information would be very welcome.
