‘Another story that I can remember from my Forestry Ploughing days. I think it was in the late sixties or early seventies. I was in Glendaruel, and the tractor was an International tractor with no cab and a trailing plough. I was on my own ploughing with a banksman up on top of the hill when a thunderstorm struck. We saw it coming in and took shelter beside the diesel fuel boggie which had large rubber tyres.

The banksman was on one side of wheel, and I was on the other side when there was an almighty flash and bang which shook the boggie and the ground around us. The lighting had hit the wheel nut on the fuel boggie and left a large black burnt area around the wheel stud. Thank goodness for the rubber tyres. The two of us grabbed our piece bags and took off down the hill as fast we could run.

Sorry there are no photos of the tractor but the area of the incident is marked on the photograph where we were before the trees were planted.
This story is in my book.’
