Date Added: 18 November 2021 Contributor: Norman Davidson Year of Photo: 1960 Picture No: 5265

This photo came up on a social media site quite some time ago and was passed to Forestry Memories. The legend read as the Commissioners at Rannoch in 1960.

The image was passed around several people and also older records were looked out. With help from Wilma Harper (Edinburgh), Roy Neish (Buckie) and in particular Duncan Menzies (Banchory), most of the people have been identified.
Duncan was a forester at Rannoch at that time and has named many of the group. Prof. H M Steven was the Chairman of the East Scotland Regional Advisory Committee at this time, hence his presence.

The group have been named as follows:

1. ? RAC Member?
2. Willie J Riddoch (Sawmill) and RAC member
3. Frank Oliver – Conservator East Scotland
4. Pat Garrow – Head Forester Rannoch Forest
5. Prof H M Steven – Chair of East Conservancy RAC
6. Sam Petrie – Divisional Officer East Scotland
7. Davie Woodburn – District Officer – Dunkeld

The RAC membership for East Scotland Conservancy was as follows:

Prof. H M Steven
The Hon James Bruce, The Lord Glentanar
J B Hendry (Head Forester Atholl Estates)
Sir Ian Forbes Leith
A Duncan Millar
Lt.Col J W Nicol
R A Raffan
W J Riddoch

I had the privilege to work with Pat Garrow in the 1970s. He was a remarkable, gifted man who inspired all those who worked under his leadership. His wife, Mrs Garrow, was a remarkable person too. I remember her telling me about Pat's transfer from Tentsmuir Forest to Rannoch and how she gave up a modern house with a kitchen and electricity to settle in the forester's house, which at that time had no electricity and no proper kitchen.
I remember other stories about Pat but they don't really fit with this picture. It certainly brings back memories.
