Danny Younie on Ferguson tractor in Newton Nursery
The photographs are courtesy of Myra Younie, Clerical/Admin Officer at Laigh of Moray Forest and Moray Forest District, who maintained forestry photograph albums over several years.
Danny Younie in action on his Ferguson tractor with reciprocating bar seed bed undercutter working on some fine even seedbeds of Sitka spruce.
The reciprocating action of the under cutter blade is taken from the PTO shaft which has an off centre bearing that activates a rod linkage to the two pivot arms of the under cutter blade.
The tractor is a 1967 London registration commonly used for FC vehicles and machines at this time.
Danny actually began his forestry career in 1935 or 1936 at Newton Nursery after leaving school but left on outbreak of war and joined the army. He was still in the army, based in Germany, after the war and only demobbed in the late 40s or early 50s and rejoined the Forestry Commission at Monaughty Forest. By this time timber harvesting work was increasing and perhaps following the 1953 windblow Danny’s skills as a machine operator were put to good use in driving modified agricultural tractors to extract timber. By the early 1960s he was living with his wife Myra in No 7 Newton Nursery. He again took on his tractor driving role this time in the forest nursery as work there became increasingly mechanised. Danny must have retired about 1986.
Any comments very welcome.
