Bert attended the Glentress Forestry School in the years 1949-1951 following which he was posted for short periods to Fetteresso, Drumtochty and Montrimond. In 1955 he headed for Craigvinean and was a forester there until April 1959. During this period he had a four month spell as a member of a travelling Tariff Team. In 1959 not that long married, Charlotte and Bert moved to Tentsmuir and during their 11 very happy years there, raised their two children Joy and John. Promoted to Head Forester Bert transferred further north into Moray and took charge of Monaughty Forest in 1970. Within a year he was Chief Forester at Craigellachie and in 1985 with yet more reorganisations took up the position as District Forester in charge of Forest Management in Speyside then Moray Forest District.

There was, confusingly, another Bert Thompson at the event but with a different spelling of the surname. He is in one of the photos too. Comment left on 12 June 2022 at 23:25 by Douglas Clark
