14th Lord Lovat - First Chairman of the Forestry Commission in 1919 – New panels at Eskadale Church
Graham Hamilton, Black Isle, has submitted the above image of new information boards erected at Eskadale Church near Beauly.
Graham writes:
“You will recall that Bob Main suggested that we should have something to mark the connection of the 14th Lord Lovat with the Forestry Commission at Eskadale Church where Lord Lovat is buried.
A programme of renovation of the church has now been completed and I am happy to tell you that an information board is also now in place which describes Lord Lovat as ‘Founder of the Forestry Commission’. Of course, he was not the sole founder of the Commission but there is no doubt that he was the major influence.
I visited the church last week. It now looks rather splendid and the information boards are well positioned and not at all intrusive. There has not yet been any event to mark this but the present Lord Lovat is hopeful that we might have something next spring. The information board about Lord Lovat was financed by Scottish Forestry and John Risby will share the organisation of such an event with Lord Lovat if it takes place.
If you find yourself in that area, please call at the church. We are indebted to Bob for the suggestion in the first place, and to John and Scottish Forestry for supporting it financially.
Unfortunately the church currently remains locked, which is perhaps understandable, and I am afraid that it is unlikely to be swamped by visitors given the relatively remote location. However I believe it to be a very good outcome.”
