Stroan House - Glentrool Forester’s House near Loch Trool.
The images are courtesy of Joan Park, Perth whose father, Hamish, was a forester at that time based in Glentrool Forest and moved to Stroan in 1963. The house was previously the property of the Earl of Galloway and used by a succession of farming tenants.
The aerial view shows the recently made vegetable garden below the front dyke. Joan recalls:
“That area down from the front of the house dad used as a vegetable garden. It was bordered with big blocks of granite that came from a chimney stack that had to be removed and replaced before we moved in. You can see how the new one differs from the chimneys to the right on the aerial view….much smaller. Yes there was a telephone pole which brought the line in. We used to get some spectacular thunder storms in the Glen…they could rattle around for hours. Sometimes the electricity in the air would come along the wire and make the phone ring. Noisy nights! Often power cuts too….and out would come the tilly lamp! Water came from a spring up the hill behind the house…..some summers the supply could almost dry up. We also had instances of ‘foreign objects’ getting stuck in the pipe and stemming the flow….think once it was a frog!”
