James Jones Ship Yard, Buckie – wooden fishing boat
The image is from a collection of slides and photographs ‘rescued from the skip’ and handed to Forestry Memories. Generally very little information with or about them and for details we will have to rely on readers’ memories or geographical knowledge.
Name of boat is not shown but must be getting on to the last of the all wood fishing boats built at the yard. Each boat would have used considerable amounts of Scottish timber – oak for the frames and larch for the hull cladding which was pinned to the frames with large wooden dowels.
The PDF shows two ship yard workers cutting off the ends of the dowels or pins and hand planning them and the hull smooth ready for caulking and painting. Lovely image.
Can more information on the images, the boat and workers be added?
I own one of their vessels, she was yard number 141, built in 1968 as and still is called ILENE. It seems that so much information was thrown away when the yard closed, and despite the thousands of wooden boats built in Scotland, only a few survive and even less information is left.
I'd love to try and catalogue as much info as possible before it's lost for good. I also know some very knowledgeable people that might be able to help identify what you have.
