Fort William Pulp and Paper Mill under construction about 1964
The image is from a collection of slides and photographs ‘rescued from the skip’ and handed to Forestry Memories. Generally very little information with or about them and for details we will have to rely on readers’ memories or geographical knowledge.
It would appear from this image that the process of construction of the pulp and paper mill is about complete. It may have started pulp production in 1965/66.
Note that the construction workers accommodation huts are still in place but the entry gate and weigh bridge for the timber lorries looks very clean and complete. In fact the large concrete hard stand for the wood chips is also finished and there is a small pile of chips piled in the corner. From the pile shape it looks as though they were dumped by lorry and partially piled up – possibly as test material from elsewhere for the chemical pulping process. There does not appear to be any pulp wood logs on the gantry bays.
