Benmore Forester Training School Magazine – The ‘Rutter’
The two magazines dated as Spring 1957 and Christmas 1958 were found by Eric Morley, Knaresborough, in a job lot of older newspapers and other printed items that he had purchased. When he searched on the internet for the name ‘Benmore Forester Training School’ printed on the magazines, Eric was eventually able, through Forestry Memories, to forward the items for scanning and inclusion on this website. We are indebted to Eric for forwarding these rare copies of the Rutter.
The Spring 1957 edition in below in the attached PDF and the Christmas 1958 edition in the following Photo Record No 5107. The contents consist of verses on various subjects, short articles and some tongue in cheek student exploit updates. There is a brief editorial mention of the death of Dr Chrystal, the noted entomologist, who taught some of the students for a short period.
Many of the contributor have published under pseudonyms but there is a fair sprinkling of Northern Ireland aspect articles. Names that could well be students of the time are:
J Speers (Editor)
J Lawson
D B O’Kane
G Richardson
Hugh Gledhill
T D Devine
M Allen
D MacCallum
Any information on the contributors or other students of the time would be very welcome.
