Applying urea with blue dye to cut stump
The image is from a collection of slides and photographs ‘rescued from the skip’ and handed to Forestry Memories. Generally very little information with or about them and for details we will have to rely on readers’ memories or geographical knowledge.
The gallon sized plastic bottle and large paint brush were all part of the felling operator’s kit and was carried around along with the saw, fuel and the felling lever. The solution was liberally applied to freshly cut stumps to prevent the spores of a butt rot fungus from colonising the stump and then through root contact spreading to surrounding trees or infecting any trees in the follow on replanted crop.
