Storing nursery trees in coldstores
The image is from a collection of slides and photographs ‘rescued from the skip’ and handed to Forestry Memories. Generally very little information with or about them and for details we will have to rely on readers’ memories or geographical knowledge.
The year is uncertain when cold storage of trees for planting came into general practice. However it was found that planting seasons could be extended from April up into May and beyond if cold store plants were used carefully and in small batches. In the early days (as shown here) clear plastic bags were used and easily ‘cooked’ the young trees if bags were left exposed to strong sunshine.
Nurseries also used cold stores to lift plants in winter/spring and then line them out in later spring and the summer. Prior to purpose built cold stores for plants being built, commercial buildings such as those owned by Salvesen were used and this may be the case here.
Any information welcome.
