Retirement of Jimmy Sutherland - Culbin Forest Worker
The photograph is courtesy of Myra Younie who maintained a collection of Forestry Commission event and retirement photographs when she worked in the forestry offices in Morayshire. Note that LOM refers to Laigh of Moray forest Unit which included Culbin, Monaughty, Roseisle as well as Newton forestry areas.
Jimmy Sutherland was originally a Forest Worker in Culbin Forest which had a large work team until all the sand dunes were planted up. Some of the team worked in the tree felling squad in later years. Amalgamation into Laigh of Moray Forest and in particular mechanised harvesting with modern harvesters and forwarders resulted in less and less work for the out stationed teams. Jimmy was one of the last of the Culbin Forest workers. He also at one time drove the harvesting forwarder tractor in the forest and latterly worked with the remaining forest management team planting draining and the many other day to day jobs.
