Retirement of Sandy McIntosh Clerk of Works, Balnacoul Depot
The photograph is courtesy of Myra Younie who maintained a collection of Forestry Commission event and retirement photographs when she worked in the forestry offices in Morayshire. Note that LOM refers to Laigh of Moray forest Unit which included Culbin, Monaughty, Roseisle as well as Newton forestry areas.
Sandy joined the Forestry Commission in 1946 and an article in the Slasher magazine describes him “During his 38 years of service, Sandy McIntosh led by the example of considerable drive and energy. With him spades were always spades and he achieved remarkable standards of output and economy. He was held in the highest regard both within the Forestry Commission and among outside contractors.
Sandy is a man of great character and diverse talents and there is no task that ever defeated him.
His duties included the organisation and the running of the Forestry Commission sign unit and the Joinery Workshop where he applied his considerable talent for design in the production of picnic furniture and toilet blocks which are regarded as first class by Local Authorities and the Countryside Commission.
A replacement for Sandy has not been easy and his retirement, originally due in 1983, was extended on no less than six occasions.”
