A grainy shot of a restored heavy duty four wheel Foden truck with large rear winch at some type of show event.

These lorries must have been used in the 50s or earlier to haul timber to roadside. Were they originally breakdown trucks for lorries and army vehicles?

Any detail very welcome.

A Foden STG5 4x2 tractor, used for heavy haulage, timber haulage and by showmen for hauling their fair rides. I believe the winch was made 'in-house' by Foden. I suspect, but don't know that this tractor was used to haul a pole timber trailer and the winch would have been used to extract the logs from beside a forest track and then to tush them onto the pole trailer, using the rope to roll the logs up skids onto the bolsters that could be adjusted for length along the pole of the pole trailer. Being more nimble this version of the tractor would have seen more off-road use in the wood, rather than the 6x4 version in the preceeding image of the James Jones tractor. Differing final drive differential ratios were available and tractors were set up for the clients proposed type of work. If you are really keen at model engineering there is a 35 drawing set of engineering drawings available that would enable you to build one of these Foden STG5 4x2 at 4" or quarter scale.
