Plough ripper tine working at Malling on slopes above Lake of Menteith

A view of a mounted twin tine plough, possibly with a ‘mole’ attachment but actual construction is not clear. Mounted on what looks like a D6 Caterpillar tractor, the plough has no mould boards and cultivation relies on disturbance by the two underground tines and the vertical blades on which they are mounted. The contractor is possibly McLarty of Crieff on contract to Economic Forestry Group (EFG).
Planting trees on this type of cultivation is not straightforward as finding a firm stable site near to the ruptured line is sometimes difficult at the designated spacing. There is also a tendency for some erosion on the steeper slopes and tree roots can be left exposed. The big advantages of course are that the tree roots are not constrained as with furrow ploughing and thus can create a more stable tree crop and also erosion down the plough furrows is negligible.
