Economic Forestry Group (EFG) staff event August 1990
The photograph and detail is courtesy of Tom McLellan and features EFG staff in McDiarmid Park, Perth. This note worthy historical event represents the last gathering of Economic Forestry Group (Northern management staff) prior to their amalgamation with Tilhill Forestry.
Attached as a PDF is the front cover of the Last Edition of the original Tree Scribe, The House Journal of Tilhill Forestry (No 28) that was published in December 1990, together with the front page of the First Edition of Tree Scribe (No29) that that was published in 1991 and which became The House Journal of Tilhill Economic Forestry (TEF as it became known) following the merger of EFG with Tilhill.
Tom is unaware of the existence of any photographs of Tilhill Forestry staff and most of the records relating to Tilhill Forestry are contained in their in-house publication Tree Scribe.
Tom McLellan comments:
'As noted by the Chairman of TEF "The national budget of 1988 has proved to be a watershed in forest policy in the United Kingdom". As a result of the budget changes of 1988, for Tilhill Forestry this meant significant restructuring in 1990 in order to adapt to the new circumstances. For EFG the budget of 1988 resulted in the business having to look for a new partner.
To the credit of the Directors of both Tilhill and EFG, they spotted that there was a great synergy between the two businesses, in terms of forest management and investment strategy, together with the professionalism and quality of the forestry staff - as the Chairman of TEF said at the time, "The two oldest and most reputable names in private forest management and nursery production have merged to form a new force in the industry".
Although the name of the combined business has reverted to Tilhill Forestry and the company is now under the wing of BSW, the ethos of the combined company formed in 1991 has meant that it remains one of the most significant forces within forest management in Britain to this day.'
